COVID 19 AND MASKS

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

BENEFITS VERSUS DOWNFALLS

Wearing a mask to prevent the spread of Covid 19 is a topic of huge debate throughout the world. Does it help? Study after study claims that certain types of masks, if worn correctly, and used in conjunction with the basic other safety protocols that have been set into place, does indeed help slow the spread of this virus. Obviously, people need to continue to wash their hands, sanitize frequently, avoid touching their faces, clean everything that is being handled or fondled, and of course follow social distancing rules. Masks do help block the transmission of the corona virus by preventing the wearer from spreading fluids while stopping most external contaminates from entering the body.

TYPES OF MASKS

There are four basic types of masks being used now, and each of them have benefits and downfalls:

1) Bandanas and Handkerchiefs: Many people are making simple face coverings with these easy to find items. They have been found to be mostly ineffective against preventing the transmission and receiving of the virus. They are extremely loose fitting and allow leakage around every side.

2) N95 Masks: As most people know this type of face covering will prevent 95% of virus fluids and sprays from entering the body through the nose and mouth. The problem with these masks is that they must be fitted for them to work properly. Overall, the N95 mask is the top-rated mask if fitted and used correctly. Even without following the strict guidelines they do help prevent the transmission and receiving of Covid 19.

3) Surgical Masks: This type of mask can currently be hard to find because they are reserved for medical workers, but they are a good choice. They are loose fitting, comfortable, and disposable. They are effective in preventing the wearer from spreading the virus, and partially effective when it comes to receiving the virus. The one problem with a medical mask is that they allow small virus particles to gain access around the outer edges.

4) Cloth Masks: These are the top suggested mask from the CDC and the most popular worn by the public. They are easy to buy, easy to make, and the cloth can be washed and worn repeatedly. Cloth masks can be made to fit the face of the person wearing the mask and they are comfortable in most any setting. This type of mask can slow the spread of the corona virus by blocking particles from being transmitted and received.

MASK UP

Regardless of the opinion that each person may have, wearing a mask in public may be the new normal way of life. It must be combined with the basic safety routines to prevent the spread of the disease, along with social distancing and using common awareness of the consequences of actions. Masks may seem to be a pain, and be a burden, but it does slow the spread of Covid 19. For now, wearing a mask is like putting on your pants. A habit that needs to become routine.
