Cooking a turkey in a traditional oven is definitely a thing of the past. Using an Oster Roaster Oven, or any type of roaster oven, is the way to go. It cooks the turkey faster and much more evenly. It also allows you to cook it from frozen.
I still prefer to unthaw my bird in the fridge for a few days, but that is a personal preference of mine.
Before beginning, you need to figure out the size of the bird that you have, and how long you will need to cook it for. A good rule of thumb to follow is 15 minutes for every pound. However, a roaster oven does cook faster than a conventional oven so I highly recommend checking on the turkey periodically to prevent overcooking. Regardless of the cooking time, or how it looks, always check the internal temperature before consuming any type of poultry.
The internal temperature of the turkey should be at least 165 degrees before eating it.
Cooking a turkey in an Oster Roaster Oven begins with:
Remove turkey from the freezer at least 3 days prior and place in the fridge to thaw (if you plan on this step)
Unwrap the turkey and remove the packages, and the neck, from the inner cavity. Rinse and clean the bird.
If it is frozen follow the specific directions for your unit and unthaw before proceeding.
Preheat the roaster on the highest setting for 20 minutes.
Inject the bird with apple juice to ensure that the final product is moist and juicy.
While the roaster is heating, rub the entire bird with butter. to help give the outer skin a crisp, golden brown. (It will not be as crisp or brown as in a conventional oven).
Season to your liking. I use salt and pepper.
Place back in the refrigerator until the roaster is preheated.
Once the turkey is ready to be placed into the preheated oven, slide it onto the racks, breast up. Cook on the highest temperature for 30 minutes and then turn down to 325 degrees for the remaining time.
Remember, when cooking your turkey in an Oster Roaster Oven, or any other type of Roaster Oven, to base your cooking times off of 15 minutes per pound. Check your bird on a regular basis, and check the internal temperature before eating any type of poultry.
The internal temperature should be at least 165 degrees. Check numerous spots within the thickest areas of the breast and thighs, to make sure the entire bird is cooked thoroughly.
