Montana is an extremely popular fishing state. Polson, which borders along the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, must be included on every “to do list”. Fishing throughout this enormous lake can yield huge fish that any angler would be proud to brag about. Whether from shore or on a boat, the many different breeds of fish can be caught on any given day with lures, flies, or live bait.
MONSTER LAKE TROUT
Twice a year the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes (CSKT) offer anglers up to $200,000 for tagged Mackinaw Trout, better known as Lake Trout. Anglers from all over the world can come down and participate in this event. These trout can get up to 59 inches long and can weigh over 40 pounds.
Lake trout prefer cold waters so fishing from a boat is preferred. Perch, which is the main food source for the Mack’s in Flathead Lake, circle close to shore in the early Spring and Late Fall. During these times the larger fish come out of the cold depths to gorge on the perch, making it possible to catch them from the shore or docks. Catching a Mack of this size can be an experience of a lifetime. Adding a cash prize when turned over to the tribe makes it even better.
FISHING FOR ALL AGES
The various types of fish within this lake makes it a great destination for anglers of all ages. Trout fishing from any area of the lake can yield large Rainbows, Lake, Bull, Cutthroat, and even Brook Trout. Trout are not the only fish found in this lake, though. Mountain and Lake Whitefish are abundant in the shallow bays. Perch and Bass can be caught in the areas of thicker plant growth.
The many docks, boat launches, and fishing access sites makes it easy to gain access. If a boat is owned, or rented, the locations for catching fish are endless. The numerous docks located on the lake are amazing places for children of all ages to catch little fish, with the occasional monster. Either way, there is never a dull moment of fishing on Flathead Lake.
POLSON IS THE ONE STOP FISHING DESTINATION
Polson, Montana is one place that everyone needs to visit when planning a fishing trip. Children and adults of all ages and locations can have a fishing trip to remember. There are several fishing areas throughout the city of Polson, as well as all around the lake. Remember, though, that half of the lake is on tribal land, so a special permit is needed. Don’t get caught fishing without it.
Bottom line, Flathead Lake is an angler’s paradise. So, come on down to this amazing little town, bring some fishing gear, a cooler full of cold drinks, and bring some friends.
